Smart room concept and app

This project was part of a class assignment in Advanced Interaction methods, the aim of which was to give us a hands on experience on experimenting with interaction patterns, both in physical and digital products.
We chose to work on an internet of things project as a way to get workable knowledge in the field.

The Situation

Waking up for class anytime before 2pm when you are a student in Sweden during wintertime is everything but easy. So we decided to try to find solutions to this challenge, using the knowledge and the tools we were learning in this class.

The Physical Environment

What makes waking up harder and less natural is the absence of light; long and dark winters are typical in Sweden and having to be in class at 8 means at times you don't get to experience daylight until your second lecture. So we used smart lights in the room to adapt the waking up process to our biological clock. We also used temperature and humidity sensors to make up for a smooth and gradual process of waking up.

The app and dashboard

The dashboard keeps track of the data of all the sensor,s allowing the user to have aggregated information of their room's conditions at all times.
The app had 2 basic functionalities: controls to all the sensors and an alarm clock coupled with a sleep tracker, which combine to offer a smooth waking up experience by controlling all the sensors.

Conclusions

Abstracting the technology needed to achieve a project is a good exercise to push limits and focus on the end user experience only. This project allowed us to do just that and was overall an exciting and fruitful journey of combining a physical space and and experience with technological solutions.
